Fic: Mornings (SS/HP), PG

loved

current mood: loved

I was inspired (don't ask by what) to write a late Valentine's Day ficlet. Not wanting to look a gift from my Muse in the mouth, I'm duly submitting this for your consideration. Cross-posted to snape_potter.

Title: Mornings
Author/Artist: athenakt (Athena Keating-Thomas)
Rating: PG
Warnings: Navel-gazing. Snarry, but tame. Set in an unspecified future, possible disregard of Book 6 due to warm fluffiness.
Disclaimer: The HP universe was created by JKR, of course.
Word Count: 496
Summary: Harry thinks about his past, current, and future situation with Snape during early morning musings.

I used to value my late mornings, clinging to sleep whenever the opportunity arose. Those times were rare enough between my school years and the summer times of demanding chores. Whenever I was able to, I kept myself submerged in sleep with the stubborn fierceness of a hibernating bear. Or so I'd imagine a hibernating bear would be like from what I've read.

I've also read about changes one experiences as one ages. Evolving tastes for food and drink, new tolerances, new allergies, strengthening or weakening vision, changing metabolism, and the lessening need for sleep. While Severus says that fortunately I'm learning how to enjoy civilized food and conversation, and I can now do more and more without the need for me to wear my glasses in order to see clearly, it took me the longest time to find my way out of the bear cave when it comes to sleeping late.

Because the Quiddich pitch was left open for the teams to practice early, the classes I taught didn't start until mid-morning. With Dobby around, I didn't have to worry about missing breakfast on those days that I couldn't resist oversleeping. But as the years passed, Severus and I worked past our grudges. We found that our grudging respect for each other was developing into something more.

Now with the next generation of Hogwarts students still snug in their beds, I find myself waking before sunrise. Severus stays up late with his potions and hallway patrols, and slumbers until the alarm goes off. It is then that I may peek through the most basic barriers that Severus still cannot manage to lower. The expression upon his face during times of peaceful sleep is one that I can never seem to get enough of.

Most importantly are those times that he feels aches and pains and isn't awake enough to hide them from me. I open my eyes and sometimes see a trace of a grimace or a furrowed brow that he is unaware of displaying. Softly I murmur to him, "What's wrong?"

Severus will stir then, not quite awake enough to speak more than briefly of what pains him. Most often these days it is his lower back that twinges and aches. Sometimes I'll forgo asking him and just place my sleep warmed hands over his tensed muscles, rubbing and massaging as I'm rewarded with a low moan of appreciation.

It is as though during the day, Severus feels that anything that causes him discomfort isn't worth mentioning. That he isn't worthy of causing anyone else to go out of their way for him. That it isn't necessary for anything to be done for him beyond something he might need in order to perform his function. Frankly, I'm amazed I was able to battle my way into his life at all.

I doubt I'll be able to change him when it comes to this. But that's all right. Because now I value my early mornings.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of short fic, but the quality I'm seeing from authors like you is slowly converting me.

This was well done, particularly in Harry's voice. It feels IC but I also get a clear sense of the fact that he has aged and not just because he's talking about getting older.

Beyond being technically satisfying you also hit all a few of my favorite squee buttons - being a long time relationship, watching a lover sleep, taking care of a lover. It was quietly fluffy in a purely good way (not too schmoopy or sappy). Well done.

Heh. The odd thing is- I'm not a huge fan of short fic either! I much prefer epics when I can get my grubby paws hands on them. Nothing better than a wonderfully written fic in the short novel - epic range.

This story just hit me blindsided, however. It demanded to be written, and it was a simple concept that didn't want anything else to be added to it. That happens from time to time with me- ergo my small scattering of short fics. *sobs*

I do have a long WIP that will be finished, and two long fics in the planning stages. What I don't have is a lot of time to write...

I'm glad I was able to hit squee buttons; that's always a bonus! My preference is for Adult!Harry in Snarry fics; he tends to be younger in my Gen fics. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. *beams happily*

Aww, that was so very sweet! I love how they've aged together, and Harry has changed his treasured habits for his lover. Very touching. :)

I'll just say I was inspired by RL and leave it at that for now. ;)

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the story, and extra pleased about your comment. Thanks for letting me know the bits you liked!

Aw, that's really lovely. I've been away from the HP fandom lately, but things like this remind me that there's some really great stuff worth reading out there.

We just wanted to let you know that we've recommended this story on snarry_reader.

This journal contains a fairly comprehensive list of those Snape/Harry stories, art and meta we've most enjoyed. It's a work-in-progress as we're still adding stories and writing summaries/reviews. If there’s a different site you’d like us to link your story to, or any other changes you'd like us to make, please let us know. We've put a general warning of potential NC-17 content at the top of our list.

Thanks,
Gaycrow, on behalf of Snarry Reader

Wow- thank you very much for the rec! I visit your journal from time to time when I'm looking for something to read. ;)

At the moment, my LJ is the only place I've posted this particular story. I really should change that...

This is a short piece of well-written prose! Especially the quoted bit in italics, sober and poetic.

That particular paragraph came straight from the heart, believe me.

I don't think my writing has ever been labeled with such complimentary words. Thank you!
